Hand Crafted Gardener's Socks from Cranky Socks
SKU:
Knit on an antique circular sock machine and finished by hand, these socks are perfect for your favorite gardener or anyone appreciating a warm, sturdy, no-frills sock. Reinforcement yarn in the heel and toe increases the wearability and comfort of the socks. Socks are machine washable and dryable as they are a combination of wool, acrylic and holofil. Antique sock machines were manufactured from approximately the mid-1800’s until as recently as 1980 in this country. There were many company names associated with the machines, including Gearhart, Legare, AutoKnitter, and Home Profit. The machines were used during World Wars I and II by organizations such as the Red Cross to knit socks for soldiers. A cottage industry was also spawned by these machines – a machine would be purchased by a family, socks were knit on the recommended yarn, and then the company would buy back the knitted socks for resale – providing they met their very strict standards.
